Outdoor and Wild Swimming

For those who enjoys swimming in the ocean, off season temps can make swimming in the sea a challenge if one lives in a northern clime. One can acclimate to cold water. Also, there are many types of insulated swimming tops and bottoms.
Swimming is fun and one need not participate in a triathlon to acclimate and enjoy swimming outside the summer months.

If you are interested in swimming, read about folks organized, acclimated to the water temperatures and learned how to do it safely at the Outdoor Swimming Society's website

Baystate Bike Week Begins May 11th

During the last few years the Nantucket powers that be (people, businesses, politicians and contractors) have planned, funded and built several new roads specifically for bicyclists and walkers.

NRTA, Nantucket's seasonal public transportation systems operates buses equiped with bicycle racks. The bus routes run parellel to bike paths and be met at one of the various bus stops along the bike paths. There are bike racks posted at bus stops and all about town.

Bringing a bike or renting one on the island is easy with the help of the ferry lines and bicycle rental shops. Some shops are close by the piers where the ferry boats dock. There is even a bike rental shop on the road coming from the airport and another on Surfside Rd.

If you do bring your bike, you will find that no matter which direction you ride, there is flora and fauna, beaches and grand views guaranteed to take your breath away. Check out the man made beauty in the form of architecture in town and all over the island.

Please be sure to wear a helmet and mind the one way signs and enjoy the fresh ocean air.

Bicycles must be walked on the sidewalks in town, if not ridden on the streets.

Kayaking In Spring

Nantucket has had it's share of mild spring days this year. It is relaxing kayaking along the shores without the clutter of summer boat traffic, the threat of hurricanes during the fall and the high winds and cold of winter.

Yesterday, Today Like Night and Day

Taking time to enjoy a paddle before the sun sets,  I hear the ferry whistle blow, as it carries visitors back to America. As the wind picked up I floated past the marshes and noticed a bird catching dinner and then settle in for the evening

Smile :) Black Eyed Susan's Will Be Opening Soon

Black Eyed Susan's will be open for breakfast soon with the most scrumptious pancakes on island, Pennsylvania Dutch Cakes. MmmmmMmmmmmm

There will be days when the harbor is as smooth as glass

and flowers will blossom in the window boxes

No Better Therapy Than Music

In 1998, the year he turned 75, Ned Rorem completed a major 90-minute song cycle comprising 36 settings that he entitled "Evidence of Things Not Seen."

The truth I feel is the music made by family as we lived our lives and the children grew into who they are by playing, singing and listening to music. It was not just us who made or listened to music. Our instruments were made by children, women and men or sung by the voices of people. For those of us who who acheived stillness on a day, when we opened our doors and windows or walked along the shore, we heard the music of the surf, the morning choir of birds, wind in the trees, cicadas buzzing and the voices of our children singing.
